Retailers Holiday Season

Retail will show a net positive through the rest of the year. Consumers will take advantage of the holiday sales. Retailers and developers are taking the back seat and waiting to see how the end of the year plays out. Analysts believe the sales increase will be short-lived and we will continue to see retail store closings of struggling locations at the beginning of next year. By the middle of next year retailers will have a better idea of the economy and if it will slide back into recession or continue to stabilize and improve.

The 2011 holiday season is expected to be great, but the market will return to below average in 2012. As the economy struggles to make a come back, retail will follow. Credit for retail and restaurant companies has gone down in quality over 2011. Real estate will be advancing in slow-growth mode.

Retail Development

State and local governments of South Carolina recognize that retail development is a priority for a healthy community. A bill was introduced by South Carolina lawmakers to encourage the state’s ten regional councils to aid redevelopment of abandoned shopping centers. The bill was favorably received and will be a discussed in January when the legislature reconvenes. The new bill recommends the adoption of developer-friendly land-use planning and ordinances. Several other states are taking similar actions. Some incentives include tax deals, municipal bonding, and the incorporation of transit planning. The new South Carolina bill should help to fill retail shopping centers in Fort Mill and other cities as well.

Fort Mill retail benefits

York county plans for economic benefits from the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Local hotels have been picked to lead local efforts along with the Visitors Bureau. There will be a significant number of hotel rooms booked from August 24 through September 6. York county will provide convention organizers with a list of all the things they have to offer including retail, hotels, and restaurants. Convention organizers will put this together for convention-goers.

The convention will be primarily located at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. This makes Fort Mill even Rock Hill a quick drive down the interstate. Shuttle buses or other transportation may be set up so people won't have to drive.

Plans are still being made to look at how to help local retail businesses compete for increased business from the convention.

Online retail sales

Retailers can expect gins in their 2011 sales this coming holiday season, but not necessarily from in-store sales. Gains will most likely come from online sales. Holiday shoppers will be doing online research to find the best deals, in stores or online.

Smaller market, higher returns

Real estate investors are searching for higher returns in smaller, untapped markets. This trend is bringing retail business to smaller cities whose markets are on a rise. This will make for a faster economic recovery for these cities.

National Retail Recovery

With the end of summer comes another drop in retail across the nation. However, statistics point towards a gradual recovery. Until economic indicators improve, shoppers will continue to hold back on spending. The strong showing that started out the 2011 year has weakened as the year comes to an end. Consumer confidence needs to be strengthened again. Investor interest is still strong in grocery-anchored centers and strip malls. These quality retail centers are still doing well despite the lack of consumer confidence. There is still a lot of optimism out there.

What all does retail consist of? Retail is the sale of physical goods or merchandise from a fixed location, for example a department store or a small boutique. A retailer buys goods in large quantities from a wholesaler or manufacturer and then sells smaller quantities to the end-user, you the customer. The word retail is often interchanged with the word "shop" or "store".
